Best Movies Coming Out This Year

With many movies resuming production last year, 2022 will have several noteworthy films in theaters. While there are many highly anticipated movies to be released, here are 15 of the best movies coming out this year. 

Uncharted 

February 18 

As a prequel to the popular video game series, Uncharted follows Nathan Drake (Tom Holland), a descendant of explorer Sir Francis Drake. He is recruited by treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover the famous El Dorado. They must race to find the 500-year-old treasure before Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes his family is the true heir. If the team can solve one of the world’s most ancient mysteries, they have a chance at finding $5 billion worth in treasure and even Nate’s long-lost brother.

The Batman

March 4 

The latest movie of the Batman franchise is one of several superhero movies coming out in 2022. This film highlights Batman’s (Robert Pattinson) detective side as he pursues the Riddler (Paul Dano), a serial killer who targets the elite citizens of Gotham City. Throughout the movie, he discovers corruption connected to his own family and is inclined to make new allies to catch the killer and bring justice to the city.

Morbius

April 1

Biochemist Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) attempts to cure himself and others of a rare blood disorder. The risk seems to be a success at first until he realizes he has inadvertently infected himself with a form of vampirism. This movie follows him as he struggles to keep his good nature alive while his new evil urges are unleashed. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

April 8 

In a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), Sonic (Ben Schwartz) is ready to prove he is a true hero. Dr. Eggman (Jim Carrey) returns with a new partner, Knuckles (Idris Elba), in search of Master Emerald, which has the power to destroy civilization. Sonic and his new sidekick, Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), work together to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. 

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

April 15

The third installment of the spin-off series to the Harry Potter franchise, Fantastic Beasts, follows Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) leading up to the wizarding world’s involvement in World War II. Evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is attempting to gain control of the wizarding world when Dumbledore calls on magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his friends to fight Grindelwald’s growing army of followers. 

Legally Blonde 3

May 20 

Legally Blonde 3 is set to hit theaters later this year. Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) will return as everyone’s favorite lawyer. The movie will follow Elle Woods later in life as a mom with a thriving career. Some original cast members will be in the movie.

Top Gun: Maverick

May 27 

Reprising his role from 1986’s Top Gun, Tom Cruise will star as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Facing the ghosts of his past, Maverick gets assigned to train Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission. Through his assignment, he meets Lt. Bradeley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” The movie will also feature Val Kilmer, who will reprise his role as Lieutenant Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

Jurassic World Dominion

June 10 

In the third installment of the Jurassic World franchise, the film follows Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), and Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), among other original cast members. The film is set four years later following the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and depicts humans living with the genetically-engineered dinosaurs. 

Lightyear

June 17 

While the Toy Story franchise may have ended, the spin-off film, Lightyear, will follow Buzz Lightyear (Chris Evans), the hero who inspired the well-known action figure. The movie depicts Buzz’s origin story and his adventures to infinity and beyond.

Minions: The Rise of Gru

July 1 

A 12-year-old Gru (Steve Carell) hatches a plan to become evil enough to join his favorite super-villain group known as the Vicious 6. In this sequel to the spin-off movie, Minions (2015), Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and a new minion, Otto, help Gru in his plan to become the world’s greatest supervillain. 

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)

October 7 

The first of a two-part sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, the animated superhero film will feature Miles Morales/ Spider-Man (Shameik Moore) transporting Brooklyn across the Multiverse to join Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) to fight a new villain, more evil than the world has ever seen. 

The Flash

November 4 

Based upon the DC Comics character, the Flash, the movie features Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/ The Flash as he travels through time to stop his mother’s murder. While this seems like an innocent mission, his actions cause a domino effect of consequences to the timeline of his life.  

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

November 11 

The sequel to the 2018 film Black Panther, this movie will follow King T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) sister Shuri (Letitia Wright). Following the shocking death of Boseman, it is unclear how the film will address T’Challa’s absence. While other details of the movie have yet to be released, fans can look forward to the return of several original cast members. 

Avatar 2

December 16 

In this long-awaited sequel to the popular 2009 film, Avatar, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Ney’tiri (Zoe Saldana) have started a family on the planet of Pandora. However, when a threat from their past resurfaces, Jake must fight alongside Ney’tiri and the army of Na’vi to protect their home. Kate Winslet will also star among several original cast members.

Hocus Pocus 2

TBD

The iconic 1993 film Hocus Pocus will have a sequel releasing sometime later this year. Three young women bring back the Sanderson Sisters, played by original cast members Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. The women must stop the child-hungry witches before they cause chaos in modern-day Salem. Doug Jones will also reprise his original role as Billy Butcherson.
