Set during the peak of the 1930 Great Depression along a desolate stretch of Route 25 known as Hell’s Half Acre, two rival gas stations wage a desperate war for survival. On one side stands Matt Stewart, a proud, failing Standard Oil operator watching his livelihood slip away. On the other is Harland, a volatile Shell leaseholder keeping his pumps afloat by serving pan-fried chicken from a makeshift table shoved inside an oil closet.
As truckers flock to Harland’s food, Stewart’s business collapses into ruin. What begins as petty sabotage over roadside signs rapidly devolves into a dangerous obsession. While Harland risks his life experimenting with unstable, high-pressure frying vessels alongside a sharp young kitchen worker to perfect a revolutionary recipe, Stewart’s desperation curdles into violent rage.
Driven to madness by empty pumps and ruined pride, Stewart escalates from property destruction to an armed confrontation that threatens to tear the crossroads apart in gunfire and blood. Hell’s Half Acre is a Southern-Gothic capitalism thriller about obsession, deadly rivalry, and the brutal, forgotten origins of an American empire.
