Christy Kahner is an eighteen-year-old football star in Algonquin, a mill town where the church, cemetery, steel plant, and football field define the limits of life. His father, Freddie “Mad Dog” Kahner, was once a local legend and is now a broken millworker and gambler. Christy dreams of escaping north to Cauley Station, a place tied to memories of his dead mother.
Christy falls for Maggie Boylan, a sharp, wounded cheerleader grieving her father and suffocating under her mother’s judgment. Their romance escalates quickly, and Maggie becomes pregnant. The cost of dealing with the pregnancy pushes Christy toward Richie, his childhood friend and a small-time criminal tied to Michael’s gambling operation. Christy begins manipulating football scores for money, risking his future and deepening his debt to dangerous men.
Maggie cannot go through with the abortion and redirects the dream: they will leave with the baby. Christy tries to outplay Richie and Michael, using his football talent and criminal leverage to get enough money for the bus north. But the town closes in. Richie’s jealousy and Michael’s violence threaten to destroy them. Mad Dog, seeing his own failed life repeating in his son, intervenes at the bus station and lets Christy and Maggie go. Unable to escape his own past, Mad Dog kills himself as their bus departs for Cauley Station.
