Starting in a climate-ravaged future, the story is about a desperate professor-turned-soldier, Ev, who struggles to feed and protect his family. When his son dies, Ev agrees to go on a mission to time travel back to the 21st century to assassinate the President, whose policies triggered runaway warming, the Venus syndrome, hoping to save his dying world and prevent his son from dying. Ev assumes the identity of a man starting work as a White House aide, but complications ensue when he forms a relationship with Helen, an environmental attorney and ardent pacifist, who awakens in him feelings he thought long-since dead. To make matters worse, authorities are in process of uncovering Ev’s disguise. Now, with the fate of the future hanging in the balance, Ev must make the most important decision in his life, knowing that if he fails in his mission the world and his son are doomed.
